Guide to the Pianist’s Repertoire: Third Edition by Maurice Hinson, Indiana University Press: Hinson’s piano repertoire guides were staples for teachers of intermediate and advanced students for decades. This particular edition from 2000, with its minimalistic white cover with black rectangles suggesting a piano keyboard, was one of the final editions before the internet began to make large reference books antiquated. But an edition of this book is great on one’s bookshelf for the joys of serendipitous discovery. Turning to the Chopin section and being reminded that there is a Debussy edition of Chopin’s works… Looking up Gershwin and stumbling on American composer Edwin Gerschefski, born just over a decade later… What did Villa-Lobos write? Oh look, there’s a piece by Vidovsky called The Death of Schroeder…yep, the cartoon character. These are the types of discoveries one makes with a physical reference book while flipping pages.
